Expresso 2222

@ Tecnopop, teamed with Luis Marcelo Mendes

Expresso 2222 is the most traditional carnival group in Salvador/Bahia (northern state in Brasil) and his leader is the tropicalist Gilberto Gil.

¶ I was asked to design its 7-year commemorative book which was meant to show the historical and money facts about the group.

¶ Book format was decided to be 22x33cm, on behalf of the proportion of Expresso 2222’s song, which is an alternation of musical movements between fifths. Each chapter features a color scheme according to one Orixá (african god), for Bahia’s and its carnival culture is very dependant on african religious signs.

¶ Typography alternates pixel and a text font, as a reflection of the group’s spirit, which serves Acarajé (Bahian traditional food), Sushi and have a huge LCD screen at the same place.

¶ It wasn’t meant to look luxurious so the hard cover only featured the kappa board with no cover and a hot-stamping green foil, and was all printed in recycled paper. 128 pages, 1000 copies at 4 process colors, offset printing.
